Transforming Transport: The Jeddah Metro
Connecting Places
The $60 billion metro network is made up of three lines and phase one will link the King Abdulaziz International Airport with the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium, central Al-Ruwais and Al-Khozam. Following on from the completion of the Jeddah Bus network, the MRT will be an advanced transport system that provides residents, tourists and visitors with a quick, modern and reliable way to move around the city. It will be the backbone of the JPTP, “forming a primary network that stretches all the way from the Obhur Creek area in the North to beyond Al Balad in the South, and from King Abdulaziz Road to the West to Amir Majed Street to the East”. It will also connect with other JPTP modes of transport to weave an accessibility grid that blankets the city, thereby improving the way commuters and visitors can move about, which is a fantastic evolution for potential investors, business leaders and the economy. At each MRT station there will be vehicular drop offs, shaded walkways and pedestrian bridges to further enhance accessibility. “Each inter-modal transit component is designed to complement the other and accommodate all users; be they residents, workers, tourists, pilgrims, families, bachelors, or the physically less-abled”.
Designed to Shine
Since this primary network will connect two of the city’s key ‘gateways’, to Makkah via the high speed rail station and to the world via the airport, it was vital that it reflect the spirit and calibre of the city and the Kingdom. That is why the internationally renowned experts at Foster and Partners were contracted in to design the stations, trains and branding. When it is completed, the Jeddah Metro will be shining beacon of technology, design and style, perfectly complimenting the dynamic hustle and bustle of the city and aiding all inhabitants in their daily lives.
The Metro Framework
As per the Jeddah Transport website, the MRT network will consist of 81 stations and 197 trainsets serving 161.1km of route. There will be four distinct lines across the city:
Orange Line: A 44.8km line running along Al Madinah Road and Old Makkah Road, with 29 stops including one at Obhur Bridge
Blue Line: A 39.6 km line running from south Jeddah to King Abdulaziz International Airport, with 18 stops
Green Line: A 17 km running through the city centre, from the downtown area to Al Haramain railway station, with 9 stops
Red Line: A 59.7 km line running from King Abdullah Stadium north to old Makkah Street through King Abdulaziz Road and King Abdullah Road, with 25 stops
