Saudi house councils harmonise the heritage of the past with the beauty of the present.
Homes in Saudi Arabia stand out with features that reflect age-old Arab customs and traditions. Many of these homes have a special area, known as the "Majlis," dedicated to hosting family gatherings and welcoming guests. This Majlis is a significant aspect of Saudi culture, rooted in hospitality and generosity, where both men and women warmly receive their guests and fulfil the duty of hospitality within an authentic Arab ambiance.
Majlis requires a lot of space, so it's not common to find them in small houses or modern apartments with limited space. Even though they are rooted in old traditions and customs, this hasn't stopped the inclusion of some modern elements in Majlis decorations. Nowadays, there are many contemporary designs offered by interior decoration companies, which strive to maintain the essence and tradition of these customs as passed down by Saudis.
When examining the updated designs of Majlis, it's evident that they now emphasise several key aspects, with colours, lighting, and contemporary decorations being the most significant. In the past, colours were generally simple and limited, with furnishings predominantly using black and red. However, today, there are multiple colour options, allowing for more creative expression. Additionally, the lighting used now is more advanced and aesthetically pleasing compared to the past.
Majlis decor frequently follows two design styles. One maintains the traditional floor furnishings reminiscent of the past, while the other incorporates modern seating arrangements with tables, vintage items, and unique chandeliers for lighting. Contemporary designs also feature gypsum board decorations, which contribute to an appealing and distinctive look, setting them apart in this era.
As time has advanced and despite the modern developments in architecture and interior design in the Kingdom, there continues to be a strong interest in preserving this traditional practice. It's an integral part of Saudi culture, and the Saudi people aim to instil it in the values of generations to come.
